State Representative and Progressive Women's Caucus Secretary, Erika Geiss (D-Taylor), held a press conference at the state Capitol to talk about bicameral legislation to set standards for human milk banks in Michigan.
In 2011, the U.S. Surgeon General’s Office issued a Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding. Among 20 action items was, “Identify and address obstacles to greater availability of safe banked donor milk for fragile infants.” HB 4206 and SB 143 aim to codify standards for milk banking practices in Michigan and ensure best practices for screening mothers; collecting, processing and providing human milk; and directing the donated milk to premature and critically ill infants where it is needed most.
“Multiple studies show that feeding breast milk to premature infants, whether from their mother or another source, has significant short- and long-term benefits,” Geiss said. “Many mothers are unaware that donated breast milk is an option. I introduced this bill to help premature babies recover and also raise awareness of this critical issue.”
Michigan’s infant mortality rate is among the highest in the nation, at 7.1 deaths per 1,000 live births. Urban areas such as Detroit and Saginaw, have infant mortality rates as high as 15.3 per 1,000 live births. One of the top causes of infant death is necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), which occurs more frequently in premature infants. Using human milk, as opposed to formula, reduces the incidence of NEC, and results in lower hospital readmissions and fewer long-term health issues.
“I'm deeply concerned by the fact that some Michigan cities have infant mortality rates on par with Third World nations,” said state Senator David Knezek (D-Dearborn Heights), who introduced companion legislation in the Senate. “Just as members of a community donate to a food pantry to help those in need, mothers have historically been able to donate milk so that at-risk babies can have a better chance at a full, healthy life. We owe it to everyone involved to maintain high standards around this practice in order to ensure that our children receive the support they need.”

St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Receives International Distinction as "Baby Friendly" Hospital
Press Release Below:
Pontiac, Mich. — (March 13, 2014) St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) today announced that it has been designated a Baby-Friendly® Hospital. SJMO is only the second hospital in Oakland County to receive the international recognition.
The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) is a global program that was launched by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in 1991 to encourage and recognize hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for infant feeding and mother/baby bonding. It recognizes and awards birthing facilities that offer breastfeeding mothers the information, confidence, and skills needed to successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding their babies.
"St. Joe Oakland has been delivering newborns since 1927 but still, we continue to get better and better at it," said Jack Weiner, president and CEO of SJMO. "Our Mother-Baby team has developed world class standards that result in safer deliveries, support mothers and encourages a baby's healthy development."
Breastfeeding has not only been proven to be beneficial for mothers, it provides everything a baby needs to grow and be healthy. It offers vitamins and antibodies not found in formula, is better overall for a baby's stomach and has been shown to lead to better test scores in English and math later in life.
Breast milk is shown to lower rates of skin diseases, allergies, sudden Infant Death Syndrome, and serious infections of the lung, ear, throat, kidneys, and bowels. Breastfeeding also lowers serious lifetime diseases, such as asthma, diabetes, childhood cancers, bowel diseases, heart disease, high blood pressure and obesity.
“With the Baby Friendly distinction, mothers-to-be can rest assured that St. Joe Oakland adheres to the most advanced evidence-based, maternity care standards in the world," says Amy Martin, M.D., a neonatologist at SJMO. "Our hospital promotes skin-to-skin contact immediately following delivery. Babies are placed directly on the mother's chest after delivery and remain there until the first feeding. These standardized methods promote early bonding and attachment between a mother and her baby and aid in a host of health benefits, including the normalization of a baby's heart rate, breathing and blood pressure after being born."
To prepare for the designation process, SJMO participated in the Best Fed Beginnings Initiative, run by the National Institute for Children’s Health Quality and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Best Fed Beginnings was a first-of-its-kind, nationwide quality improvement initiative to help a select 89 hospitals across the country improve maternity care and increase the number of Baby-Friendly designated hospitals in the United States.

Oakland County Breastfeeding Coalition would like to offer a huge CONGRATULATIONS to Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital. This designation is the first for Oakland County hospitals. Thank you to the staff and administration of HFWB on your praise worthy accomplishment!
What does this mean for our community? Read the Press Release below.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 13, 2015
West Bloomfield, Mich. – Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital is the first hospital in Oakland County to be designated a Baby-Friendly® Hospital.
The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative encourages and recognizes hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for infant feeding and mother/baby bonding. The global program was launched in 1991 by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund.
“It’s what’s best for babies,” says Brent Davidson, M.D., service chief for Women’s Health Services at Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital. “The support of breastfeeding and bonding involves mother and baby rooming together, not separated in a nursery setting, as well as skin-to-skin contact whenever possible.
“As a result, we will have healthier babies and healthier communities.”
Becoming a Baby-Friendly facility is a complex journey toward excellence in providing maternity care and compels organizations to examine and sometimes modify policies and procedures. All levels of staff undergo training.
Over three years, a multi-specialty team created a culture at Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital that not only supports a woman’s decision to breastfeed, but provides research-based practices that increase her likelihood for success.
The hospital had to meet many criteria, and undergo an onsite assessment, to earn the designation, which is for five years. Hospitals must report statistics annually and may be re-designated as Baby-Friendly at the end of the five-year period.
There are only four other hospitals in Michigan with the Baby-Friendly Hospital designation. There are 225 Baby-Friendly hospitals and birth centers in the U.S.
Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital is located at 6777 W. Maple Rd. in West Bloomfield.

HUGE NEWS FOLKS!
Here in Michigan, The House Judiciary Committee unanimously passed the Breastfeeding Anti-Discrimination Act this morning. The bill will now be sent to the full House of Representatives for consideration.

HEY MICHIGAN!!!
There is an exciting update on legislation!
The House Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on SB 674 THIS Thursday, May 22nd, at 9am. So, we need your help to keep this moving forward!
When you call, you should ask to speak with the staff member who works on maternal and child health issues. Our talking points are:
I am calling to voice my support for SB 674, the breastfeeding anti-discrimination bill that the House Judiciary Committee is holding a hearing on this Thursday, May 22nd.
This bill, which allows mothers to breastfeed their child in any place that they are otherwise legally allowed to be, was passed unanimously in the Michigan Senate on December 12, 2013. It has been on hold in the House Judiciary Committee since that time.
Passing SB 674, known as the breastfeeding anti-discrimination act, is an important step towards recognizing breastfeeding and human milk as the norm for infant and young child feeding, and ensuring that all families live, work, and receive support in a breastfeeding-friendly culture.
In addition, if you have any personal stories you are willing to share to further our advocacy work, please send them to me (and I can forward them along) several legislators requested personal stories reflecting the importance and power of breastfeeding. Please let me know if you have any questions or advocacy developments.
PLEASE SHARE THIS WITH YOUR NETWORKS, COLLEAGUES, ASSOCIATES, CLIENTS, FAMILY MEMBERS & FRIENDS!

"Micah was born three months prematurely. Human milk is essential to the health of premature infants. When mother's own milk is unavailable for premature infants, pasteurized donor breast milk is the next best option. Yet, most children's hospitals and neonatal intensive care units do not prioritize human milk as a vital, life-saving intervention for fragile infants."
